Spring Swing Set Maintenance List: Prepping for Warmer Weather

March 31, 2025

Warm weather is just around the corner, and if you own a swing set, it may need some freshening up after the winter season. Perform essential spring swing set maintenance to ensure everything is in working order and safe for the kids to play in the warm weather!

Step 1: Inspect the Swing Set for Winter Damage

The first critical step in spring swing set maintenance is to inspect the swing set for wear and tear, loose fasteners, and broken hardware.

Cold winter weather poses hazards to swing sets, eventually causing damage and even broken components, making them unsafe for children to play on. This is why, before the warm weather arrives, inspect your swing set for winter damage.

Check for structural wear and tear, and the hardware and fasteners. These critical components can make or break the swing set’s safety.

Step 2: Clean and Refresh the Playset

A well-functioning swing set also implies clean play equipment. Your swing set may contain dust and debris from sitting all winter. Wash the entire set with mild soap and water, and sanitize high-touch areas like handrails and swings.

Cleaning and refreshing the playset for the warmer weather will ensure your children and their friends can play safely in a great-looking spring swing set!

If you have a wooden swing set, you may need to use a wood sealant or stain if there are signs of weathering, such as rough surfaces. If this is the case, apply a fresh coat of sealant to protect it from moisture and future damage.

Step 3: Check & Upgrade Swing Set Accessories

The next step in spring swing set maintenance is to inspect the accessories. Check that the slides are smooth, with no cracks or rough spots that could cause injury while sliding. If there are any imperfections, use fine sandpaper to smooth them out.

Inspect the swings, particularly the metal parts such as the chains, to ensure they are not rusting. Tighten any loose bolts and replace worn-out components for a safe ride. If you notice any rust, gently sand it off and apply rust-resistant paint or sealant to prevent further corrosion. Check the climbing ropes for frayed or loose rungs. If you notice any damaged components, replace them to avoid accidents.

Of course, if your accessories are outdated, why not add fun by upgrading to new features such as a rock-climbing wall or a basketball hoop? Check out our accessories that children and families will enjoy.

Step 4: Prepare the Ground & Safety Surfacing

Once the swing set is ready to use, focus on its surroundings. When children play, they will run around the playset, so we, as parents, want to ensure that the ground and surrounding areas are safe. We want to keep the ground soft around the swing set so that if any children fall, the impact is minimized.

If you use rubber mulch, check for displacements and fill in gaps. To ensure even coverage, redistribute the mulch or wood chips with a rake. If the current materials are insufficient, consider adding or replacing them to meet the safety standard.

Step 5: Perform a Safety Check Before Playtime

Parents must ensure the swing set is safe for their children to play on. Walk around the play area and ensure that all connections, surfaces, and ground cover are free of hazards.

Also, test the swings, ladders, and slides to ensure they are stable and meet all safety standards. As a final step, review the basic safety rules with the children and remind them how to play responsibly.
