Backyard Fall Activities for Kids and Families: Making the Most of Autumn in Your Backyard

August 15, 2025

As fall approaches in Pittsburgh and the Northeast, your backyard can be the perfect place to create fall memories that will last a lifetime!

Fall doesn’t have to mean the end of playing outside. In fact, it’s one of the most beautiful times to get outside! The cooler temperatures make physical activity more comfortable. We have a few ideas for backyard fall activities for kids. Keep reading to check them out!

Playset and Swingset Activities for Fall

Autumn Obstacle Course

Transform your playset into a fall-themed obstacle course! To do this, you can use both elements from your playset and things around you, such as leaves, to create a fun activity for your whole family!

Rake leaves around your playset and challenge kids to jump from pile to pile, or have them climb up the swingset and slide down into a leaf pile. Have kids climb, slide, and swing as they search for “hidden” fall items like pinecones, acorns, or colored leaves. Set up a timed challenge where they climb the ladder, cross a bridge, swing twice, then race to find a red leaf.

Feel free to get creative with the obstacle course and make it your own!

Imaginative Play

You cannot go wrong with imaginative play! There are so many benefits, including building creativity and problem-solving skills. Your playset can serve as the base.

Here are some ideas to try:

  • Autumn animal adventures: Encourage kids to pretend they’re squirrels gathering nuts or birds, like owls, preparing for migration.
  • Fall camping: Use the playset as a base camp for backyard “camping.” Bring out lanterns and tell some campfire stories.
  • Harvest festival: Turn your playset into a mini festival with pretend games and activities.

Encourage your kids to come up with their own ideas. Every swing and slide can be used as part of the fun!

Safety Considerations for Fall Play

As we transition into cooler weather, it’s important to maintain safe play conditions. This is where quality safety surfacing becomes crucial. Rubber mulch is particularly effective during the fall because:

  • It provides excellent cushioning even when wet from morning dew or light rain
  • Easy cleanup of fallen leaves without disturbing the safety surface

Trampoline Fun in Fall

Fall weather creates ideal conditions for trampoline activities. The cooler air means kids can bounce longer without getting overheated.

Fall-Themed Trampoline Games

One of the simplest games is leaf catching. Toss handfuls of autumn leaves into the air while your kids bounce, and challenge them to catch the leaves before they fall.

Another easy idea is a color coordination game. Call out a fall color like orange, red, or yellow, and have your child touch or point to something of that color while bouncing. It keeps them on their toes and ties in with the changing surroundings.

Finally, turn your trampoline into an arena for a game of trampoline tag. In this lighthearted game, one person is “it,” and everyone else must bounce to avoid being tagged. It’s safe, high-energy, and lots of fun!

Extending the Trampoline Season

With proper maintenance, your trampoline can provide entertainment well into the fall season. AlleyOOP trampolines are designed to withstand Northeast weather conditions, but a few simple steps can help maximize their lifespan:

  • Clear leaves regularly to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Check that safety nets remain secure as temperatures fluctuate.

Basketball in Fall

Fall is a great time to encourage skill-building and create lasting family memories centered around your basketball hoop!

Host weekend family tournaments, where everyone gets involved and enjoys the cooler temperatures together. Celebrate skill milestones, like making a three-pointer for the first time. The comfortable weather also makes it perfect for inviting other families over for backyard basketball fun.

Host Fall Gatherings

Next on our list of fall activities for kids and families is to host a cozy backyard gathering with friends, family, or neighbors! Fall is the perfect season to come together and make memories outdoors.

One idea is to host a harvest celebration with pumpkin carving, hay bales, and seasonal treats like caramel apples and hot cider. Let kids play on the swing set while the adults enjoy relaxed conversations by a fire pit.

Or, host a football-themed gathering. Set up a screen outside for game day viewing, serve tailgate-style snacks, and organize halftime games like backyard football tosses or three-point basketball challenges.

A backyard fall gathering is a great way to bring people together and make the most of your outdoor backyard space.
