5 Playground Games for Kids of All Ages

June 26, 2025

At Bear Playgrounds, we know that a backyard playset is a place where kids have the opportunity to use their imaginations and create unforgettable childhood memories. If you’ve recently purchased one of Bear Playground’s backyard playsets or are exploring ways to encourage your kids to spend more time outdoors, we’re here to help you get the most out of your backyard space!

If you’re searching for playground games for kids that are fun, safe, and engaging across age groups, this list is for you. Here are five playground games that kids can play right in your backyard.

1. Obstacle Course Challenge

A backyard obstacle course is a fantastic way to mix both physical activity with creativity. You can use parts of your playset like swings, ladders, slides, and/or monkey bars, along with other backyard items, to create a course that gets your kids moving and thinking.

Here’s how to set up an obstacle course:

Start by walking through your backyard and identifying all available elements. Map out a logical flow that moves kids from one challenge to the next. Consider the age and skill level of your kids when determining the difficulty and sequence of obstacles.

Obstacle Course Ideas

Set up tunnels using cardboard boxes, play tunnels, or have kids army-crawl under a tarp stretched between two chairs. For playset integration, kids can crawl under the swing set or through any enclosed areas.

Use your playset’s ladder, rock wall, or rope climb as natural obstacles.

Lay a 2×4 board on the ground, use a balance beam attachment, or create a “tightrope” walk along the edge of a sandbox or garden bed. For added difficulty, have kids carry a ball or bean bag while balancing.

Set up hula hoops for kids to jump through, create a hopscotch section with chalk, or use your playset’s platforms for jumping down onto soft mats or grass.

2. The Floor is Lava Challenge

This classic playground game gets kids moving and thinking strategically about how to navigate their play space outside.

How to Play:

The rules are simple: once someone shouts “The floor is lava!” players must get off the ground and stay on playground equipment. The last person touching the ground becomes the next caller.

To adapt this game based on your kids’ ages, consider the following tips:

  • Ages 3-5: Use platforms, slides, and low climbing features. Give plenty of time for little ones to find safe spots.
  • Ages 6-10: Add time limits and create “safe zones” using different colored equipment or areas.
  • Ages 11+: Introduce obstacle courses where players must move from one piece of equipment to another without touching the ground.

Always ensure your playground has proper safety surfacing underneath. At Bear Playgrounds, we recommend rubber mulch or engineered wood fiber to cushion any accidental falls.

3. Playground Tag

Tag might be the most versatile playground game for kids, and your backyard playset opens up endless possibilities for creative variations!

Playground Tag Variations:

Tunnel Tag: Players can only be “safe” when they’re going through tunnels, under slides, or through enclosed spaces on the playset. This works especially well with playsets that have multiple levels and enclosed areas.

Swing Tag: The swings become the safe zone. Players can only be tagged when they’re not swinging, which adds an extra element of strategy and timing.

Color Tag: Assign different colored areas of your playground as safe zones. For example, anything red might be safe, or only the blue slide provides protection.

To make things even more interesting, try using a really soft ball or pool noodle for tagging instead of physical contact. You can also implement a “freeze” rule where tagged players must freeze until someone “safe” tags them.

4. Treasure Hunt

Transform your playground into a treasure hunt that encourages exploration and problem-solving.

To set up your hunt, first, you must create clues that lead children to different parts of the playground equipment. Here are a few examples:

  • “Find the spot where you can see the whole backyard” (top of the slide)
  • “Look where the chains swing in the wind” (swings)
  • “Check the place where pirates might hide their gold” (under the playset)

For younger kids, use picture clues instead of written ones. Hide colorful toys or stickers in obvious places. For older kids, you can create multi-step hunts that require them to work together.

5. Imaginative Role-Playing Games

The best playground games for kids often involve zero equipment beyond what you already have, just pure imagination. Here are a few of our favorite imaginative games for kids:

Pirate Ship Adventures:

Your playset becomes a pirate ship sailing the seven seas. The slide is the plank, the climbing wall leads up to the “ship”, and the sandbox has buried treasure. If your playset has a steering wheel, kids can pretend to “drive” the ship.

Space Station Missions:

Transform your playground into a “space station” where kids are astronauts on important missions. Different levels represent different parts of the station, and the slide becomes an escape pod.

Castle Kingdom:

Fort-style playsets are perfect for medieval adventures. Kids can be knights, princesses, dragons, or villagers to create their own “fantasy land.”
